What is a fire escape?
The fire escape ladder is an escape ladder that enables the rapid and safe evacuation of people and other living things in all kinds of structures during a fire or any emergency. Fire escapes are among the vital, compulsory and indispensable elements of buildings. Because in a short time like 5-6 minutes after the fire starts, it surrounds the surroundings and makes it impossible to exit the buildings. In these cases, alternative routes such as fire escapes play a key role in preventing loss of life. Unfortunately, many cases resulting in death in fires are due to the lack of fire escapes in buildings.
At the same time, these ladders allow people not only to escape safely from the structure, but also to enable fire brigades to intervene in the event of a fire and to use fire ladders as alternative rescue routes.
In which buildings are fire escapes compulsory?
The obligation to have a fire escape ladder in which buildings is determined according to the characteristics of the building. Among these, factors such as building height, number of users on one floor, usage class of the building are effective. And by examining these factors, it is decided whether fire escapes are mandatory or not. For example; There is no obligation for fire escapes in buildings that do not exceed 4 floors and are not used for residence purposes. However, apart from these special conditions, the buildings that should basically have fire escapes are listed as follows:
- Housing
- Factories
- Manufactories,
- Stores
- Shops
- Warehouses,
- Office buildings,
- Outpatient treatment centres,
- Buildings for assembly purposes,
- Hotels
- Motels
- Dormitories
- They are health structures.
Different fire escape standards are applied in these buildings. "Regulation on Fire Protection of Buildings" Section 4 includes detailed information about the escape stairs of the above headings.
Fire Escape Ladder Types
Although fire escapes can be made from inside and outside, fire escapes made from the outside are preferred. The main reason for this is that it does not cause loss of space and enables the work to be completed at less cost. In some buildings, fire escapes are constructed in the form of concrete stairs adjacent to the building, while in others they can be added later. This escape stairs It can also be designed in various ways according to the conditions of the building in special design or foldable form. However, basically the "Regulation on Fire Protection of Buildings" considers two types of fire escapes as appropriate. These are Z type fire escape ladder and circular fire escapeis. Which of these ladders to choose is decided by considering certain criteria. In particular, the choice of a correct escape ladder is a factor that facilitates the receipt of a positive report from the fire brigade. These criteria are
- Height of the structure,
- Number of people on the floors,
- Fire escape ladder dimensions,
- Intended use of the building,
- Year of construction,
- Physical conditions of the area where the fire escape ladder will be placed.
Z Type Fire Escape
Z type fire escape ladder takes its name from its appearance. These stairs, which resemble the letter Z, are more useful and safer than circular ones. The use of intermediate landings after a certain number of steps allows faster escape from the structure. Although the cost is higher than the circular one, the use of the Z-type fire escape is quite high. Briefly Advantages of the Z-type fire escapeIt is possible to list them as follows:
- It is convenient and safe.
- During a fire, the building can be evacuated much more quickly.
- It allows multiple people to use the ladder at the same time.
According to the Z-type fire escape regulations;
- When drawing Z type fire escapes, there should not be a wall distance of 3 metres or a door that is not protected against fire on the wall where the fire escape is located.
- In buildings with Z-type fire escapes, if the building height exceeds 21.5 metres, the fire escape structure should be closed to prevent the fire escape structure from falling and to ensure that the fire escape is durable and does not cause shaking.
- It should be made according to TSE standards.
Circular Fire Escape
Spiral fire escape ladder or circular fire escape This ladder is named after its shape. The reason why it is less preferred than the Z-type fire escape ladder is that people have to descend in a circle while descending and as a result, they may experience things such as dizziness or loss of balance. At the same time, since the steps are produced narrow, they do not allow fast descent. Therefore, they are seen as less safe in a way. They are especially forbidden to be used in public buildings such as schools, prisons and hospitals. The biggest advantage of the circular fire escape is that they do not take up much space. Short advantages of circular fire escape ladder They are;
- Their costs are lower.
- It allows the construction of escape stairs in old buildings and buildings with a narrow fire escape area.
- They are more elegant in appearance.
However, as it is known, the type of fire escape stairs is determined according to the rules of the regulation, not according to the wishes of the owner of the building. According to Article 43 of the "Regulation on Fire Protection of Buildings", the circular escape staircase must have the following features:
- Circular staircases may serve as compulsory exits from any floor, mezzanine, and balconies with a user load not exceeding 25 persons, provided that they are made of non-combustible material and are at least 100 cm wide. Circular staircases that do not meet the specified conditions cannot be used as compulsory exits.
- Circular stairs cannot be higher than 9.50 m.
- The step width of the step at a maximum distance of 50 cm from the centre of the bucket shall not be less than 250 mm.
- The step height cannot be more than 175 mm.
- The head recovery height cannot be less than 2.50 m.
How should fire escapes be?
According to Articles 38 and 40 of the "Regulation on Fire Protection of Buildings", the escape staircase should be as follows:
- The common stairs of the building that can be used in case of fire and other emergencies are considered as escape stairs.
- Escape stairs are part of the escape routes used in fire and other emergency evacuations and cannot be designed independently of other escape route elements.
- No flammable material can be used on the walls, ceiling and floor of escape stairs and these stairs are separated from other sections by a wall resistant to fire for at least 120 minutes and a smoke-tight door resistant to fire for at least 90 minutes.
- No matter where the fire breaks out, escape routes and escape stairs should be positioned as alternatives to each other in order to ensure the exit of all people at that level.
- Escape routes and escape stairs cannot be built side by side. The entrance to the escape staircase and the landing must be at the same level.
- Escape stairs should show continuity from the starting level to the exit level.
Fire Escape Features
According to Article 41 of the "Regulation on Fire Protection of Buildings", the escape staircase features are as follows:
- At least half of the escape stairs in terms of capacity and number must open directly outside the building.
- If the escape staircase descends to a circulation area such as hall, corridor, foyer, lobby where the exit at ground level is visible and unobstructed, the distance between the point where the escape staircase descends and the external open space cannot exceed 10 m if the escape staircase serves more than one floor. In buildings with sprinkler systems, this distance can be maximum 15 m.
- The outdoor area must be clearly visible from the point where the escape staircase descends and must be directly accessible in a safe manner. There must be an external door of sufficient width to meet the user load discharged from the internal escape stairs.
- In the escape stairs, landings are arranged at each floor level at intervals of not more than 17 steps and not less than 4 steps.
- Balanced escape stairs are not permitted in buildings with a building height of more than 15.50 m or more than 100 people on one floor.

- It can be produced as modular or fixed according to the condition of the structure.
- Earthquake resistance rate is high.
- It can be produced in a short time.
- They are environmentally friendly structures because they can be recycled.

Fire Ladder Construction
Fire escapes are installed with steel or metal construction systems. Before starting the fire escape ladder manufacturing, the building where the fire escape ladder will be built should be examined. Then in the project design phase fire escape drawing ideas are exchanged and the draft project is finalised.
Fire escape stair planning requires that fire escape stairs should be constructed without considering them separately from the escape route section. Although escape stairs have been made compulsory by regulations in Turkey, the necessary care is still not taken in this regard. For this reason, loss of life due to fire continues to occur and this situation fire escape ladder manufacturing for the development of the new system.
